There are many reasons children must be our primary focus in all family cases.
1) Wisely, it’s the law in our state that “the overarching policy goal in all family cases with children is the protection of those children’s best interests.”
2) Children are often without a voice unless parents, entire families, and attorneys, judges, and all professionals make their best interests a priority.
3) As Senior Judge Michael Scopelitis has observed, “By far the best predictor of how parents will do in divorce is how focused they are on building peace for their children.” In other words, parents who make a priority of building peace for their children are often exactly the parents who get to live in that peace themselves and create a better future for everyone in their family.
4) When educated with the kind of website and classes we make available, most parents actually very much want to move past hurt and anger to concentrate on doing well for their children—and thus for themselves and everyone in their family.
The Your Judges’ Videos page on this website offers several important ideas on our child focus, and we encourage parents and professionals to take time to watch (and re-watch) those videos. The quotes we’ve selected to appear on our homepage (and that can be downloaded here) also help capture our commitment to children’s wellbeing
Parents and professionals visiting this website will notice several important instances of this child commitment, including the co-parenting website work and classes we require, our cooperative family law rules, and the requirement that, absent exceptional circumstances, all motions must be preceded by a serious attempt to resolve any issues. And much.
We expect all parents, all extended family, and all attorneys and other professionals to join us in making a priority of children’s best interests—the single best strategy for improving outcomes in family cases.
